Adoption isn't "one-size-fits-all” and the kind of adoption you select is based on a number of criteria. Anyone in North Carolina who is over the age of 18 can apply to become the parent of another person (with the exception of spouses).

Types of Adoption in North Carolina
In our state, there are several types of adoption.
Each one has its own set of procedures and paperwork, and Riddick Law Office can assist you in navigating them.
Agency Adoption
A county department of social services or a licensed child-placing agency places a kid with the petitioner for the purpose of adoption and agrees to the adoption.
Independent adoption
A child is directly placed with the petitioner for the purpose of adoption, and his or her parent or guardian gives permission to the adoption.
Relative adoption
For the purpose of adoption, a parent or guardian directly places the child with a close relative for the goal of adoption and agrees to the adoption. A relative is defined as a grandparent, full or half-sibling, first cousin, aunt, uncle, great-aunt, great-uncle, or great-grandparent of the kid for the purposes of adoption. If the connection between the child and petitioner is not one of those listed above, it will be considered an independent adoption.
Foreign adoption
There are two distinct types of foreign adoptions. The adoption of a child who was adopted in another country by the same petitioner is referred to as "re-adoption." The other is the adoption of a child when the adoption is not finalized in a foreign country.
Stepparent adoption
A stepparent requests to be named the adoptive parent of his or her stepchild.
Adult adoption
An adult applies to adopt another person. A spouse may not adopt his or her spouse.
